I want to make this quick post to share a little secret on how to close more roofing deals without spending any extra money on advertising. This mystery takes no additional work, doesn’t require a website, business cards, or mailing postcards.
The simplest way to win more roofing deals is to answer the phone professionally. Shocking Right! But after listening to 1,000s for incoming calls between roofers and potential customers, I am shocked how some contractors answer the phone.
When a potential customer calls it is likely the first interaction they are having with your company. Before this point, your potential customer has only seen your advertisement, viewed your webpage, or was referred by a friend.
Up to this point, you have built your reputation up enough for them to want to give you a ring, why would you take the chance to ruin that reputation by answering the phone in an unprofessional manner?
Simplest way to win more roofing jobs
Professionally answering the phone starts with picking up the phone call quickly, if possible answer the phone by the second or third ring, according to Goodtemps.org.
Next, introduce your business and yourself when you pick up the phone. It is a safe bet to answer the phone by saying something like,
“Good morning. Thank you for calling ABC Roofing Company, my name is George. How may I help you?”
Be formal. Instead of saying “Who’s this?” say, “May I ask who’s calling?” You should always sound more formal at work that you do at home or on your on the phone. Be sure to address your customers as sir or ma’am.
Smile when you speak. It comes through your voice.
By using these 4 simple tips you are going to make yourself and business appear more professional and you will close more deals.
But what if I cannot answer?
I work with a lot of roofing contractors that answer their own business line because they are just starting out. If this is you, I understand that you have to save money where you can. But as a business owner, I strongly recommend hiring an answering service to screen your calls.
Hiring an answering service will screen out all of the solicitation calls, and only let the real potential customers through to you. This also guarantees that your phone is always answered professionally.
If you have the budget to hire an administrative assistant, be sure to train him or her how to answer the phone professionally as well. According to Susan Ward at The Balance, everyone in your company should be trained to answer the phone in the same way. You are going to hate losing roofing jobs because of something as little as answering the phone.
If you entirely cannot professionally answer the phone, use voice mail to answer the calls. Make sure you have a professionally recorded message, speak slowly, identify your company, yourself, and tell the request what you want them to do.
Here is the script I would recommend to have your voicemail:
“Hello. Thank you for calling ABC Roofing Company, residential and commercial roofing contractors. Sorry, we couldn’t answer the phone right now. Your call is important to us. Please leave your name phone number and reason for your call, and we will get back with you shortly. Thank You.”
Whether you are the owner or a receptionist, these tips will help you sound more professional when talking to potential customers. If hiring someone to answer the phone like a pro will help you sale two more roofs per month, would it be worth it? YES.
Now implement this training and start answering the phone professionally and close more deals.
